Council District 21 – Democratic Party Primary

Preferred Candidate

Erycka Montoya

Occupation: Deputy Director of Intergovernmental Affairs, City Council

Education: Drew University (B.A.)

Erycka Montoya has over 20 years of experience in both government and the nonprofit sector, currently serving as Deputy Director of Intergovernmental Affairs in the City Council. Her previous roles include Acting Director of Community at The Movement Cooperative and Community Engagement Manager at Friends of the High Line. In her questionnaire, Montoya supported every Citizens Union reform priority, demonstrating knowledge and confidence in addressing a variety of topics, including the legislative process, CU’s policy priorities, and her own platform. She defended open primaries as a necessary step to increase participation in a low-turnout district and provided an honest and detailed assessment of Council–Mayor relations, including what could have been done differently in last year’s push to expand advice and consent. Her grasp of the issues and clear plans for the office make her the strongest candidate in this race, and her campaign earns our preference.

Yanna Henriquez

Occupation: Chief Program Officer, Dominico-American Society of Queens

Education: Alto de Chavón School of Design

Yanna Henriquez is a civic leader working at the Dominico-American Society of Queens. She supported most of Citizens Union’s policy priorities but maintained her opposition to open primaries, arguing that more voter education is needed before such a change should be implemented. Although she is running as the county party’s candidate, she told CU she would act independently in office. Citizens Union appreciates her hard work and deep commitment to serving her community.
